It turns out that generous Georgians knit for charity! In the great state of Georgia, knitting charities abound and so do the opportunities for you to join forces with these charities to help those in need.
Ellie's Angels
'No person should ever be alone and cold' is Ellie's philosophy. In 1989, after knitting six blankets and two afghans for Atlanta's first AIDS hospice, Ellie began her mission. And over time 500 volunteers joined her knitting charity. They continue today helping thousands of men, women, and children who struggle with life and death issues.
Ellie and her angels spread God's message of love and understanding to all mankind. She truly believes and carries out her message that kindness and warmth exist for those of all races, religions and creeds. No request for a blanket, lap robe or simple act of kindness ever gets refused.
Over the years, Ellie and her army of angels hand-knit items for AIDS patients, cancer centers, Bosom Buddies, Policemen, Firemen hospitals, the Center for the Visually Impaired, and Angel Flight.

Tiny Stitches
Tiny Stitches makes up another great Georgia knitting charity. Operating as a non-profit agency, they provide basic layettes and other items to disadvantaged newborns and preemies in north Georgia. They also provide burial ensembles to any family that suffers the loss of their baby regardless of their financial status.
View examples of the layettes and burial ensembles at this charity knitting website. It is easy to see from these pictures that they put their hearts into their work and touch the lives of many families.
If you would like to begin knitting for charity help this group, contact Sandra Adair at 770-476-8864. They happily accept knit caps, bonnets, blankets, booties, and sweaters.

The national organization of knitting for charity Newborns in Need certainly gets a boost from Georgia! With four knitting for charity chapters going strong, they help many sick and needy babies and their families. In 2008 alone, Newborns in Need donated 492,000 items. What an accomplishment!
If you like the Newborns in Need volunteers, many babies exist across the U.S. and live in poverty and face critical illnesses. Join these groups and help out now. If you live in Georgia, you have four options:

The ladies of the North Georgia Knitting Guild love to knit for charity and certainly stay busy. Just stop by their website and you'll tons of free charity knitting patterns and details of projects they are currently involved in.
One of my favorites is the baby stockings and hats they knit and deliver at Christmas for the newborns in the local hospital. The pattern is free and absolutely adorable! Also available are patterns for trach and stoma covers, chemo caps, and helmet liners for the troops.
Be sure to check with the guild and see the status of each project and know where you can help them the most. If you live in North Georgia, join these ladies for some knitting fun or make and mail them your donations. For more information, contact the Georgia Knitting Guild.
Whew! This list should keep you busy! Don't see something you like here? Look around. There are knitting charities everywhere that need and would love your help. Gather up your yarn and needles and join one of these knitting charities today.
