Afghans of Honor Reaches out to Wounded Soldiers

Afghans of Honor reminds men and women who have stood in harm's way in defense of their country that they are appreciated and remembered!

Afghans of Honor knows that war is a controversial subject, but they're not out to discuss politics, beliefs, and creeds. Afghans of Honor has only one goal in mind: to honor those who have been injured in the defense of their country through a warm, loving, handmade gift!

Charity in the Face of Trials

Afghans of Honor is a recent service, conceived by Bonnie Heck late one August night. Her blog shares some of the trials and struggles of starting a project like this, from a lack of funds to discouraging responses from soldiers (one man is reported to have refused his afghan as inadequate compensation for losing his legs).

Nevertheless, Bonnie Heck soldiers on, struggling to provide something much more than a few knitted squares. The message she aims to send is, "We care. We're thinking of you. You are not alone." And as Afghans of Honor begins to take off, it's more and more obvious how true those statements are!

A Cuddle of Hope

Afghans of Honor collects warm, cuddly donations from knitters nation wide and sends them to injured members of the armed forces in military hospitals. An afghan might not heal wounds, but the message it carries matters more than all the bandages in the world!

Even if you don't have time to knit an entire afghan, you can still help out! Because Bonnie Heck is just getting started, she's more than happy to include your favorite knitting patterns on her site. She provides great links to many free patterns, but if you've created something wonderful, why not share it with Afghans of Honor? You can also make financial donations -- shipping afghans to military hospitals around the world can be a costly project!

Serving With Needles

This is your chance to make a difference to the men and women serving abroad! Afghans of Honor requests afghans that are large enough to serve as lap robes but no bigger than a twin bed. They accept any pattern, color, or theme (within reason -- a wounded solider probably doesn't need a balloon-themed afghan!).

So if you've been wondering what to do with that tenth afghan you're working up, why not honor a wounded soldier? Click here to start helping Afghans of Honor today!
