Afghans for Amigos Carries Knitting Donations to Mexico

Share your joy in creating with impoverished families with Afghans for Amigos

Jimmie Lu boasts that Afghans for Amigos can find a home for anything you might make -- and challenges you to try that boast! She and her husband, both ordained ministers, practice short term mission trips where they travel to various places to lend help and support. Their most common destinations? Mexico and Native American reservations in South Dakota.

Why Mexico?

It's easy to forget, but there's an incredible amount of poverty in Mexico. If you've ever stepped over the border, you already know that. For some reason, though, we always seem to focus on situations further removed from our home country. Thousands of people send donations to El Salvador, only a small distance south of Mexico. But Afghans for Amigos recognizes the poverty existing just a few short miles from the American border.

What's Up, Amigo?

When you check Lu's profile, you'll be astounded at the number of knitting, crochet, and charity blogs and projects she runs through Five Fold Ministries. Lu distributes donations where they'll do the most good. That means that some gifts wind up in Mexico (as the name would suggest!) while others travel to places around the world. If she believes a donation would do more good in another charity, she doesn't hesitate to pass it on to well known groups such as Project Linus.

What Can I Make?

Like I said, Lu boasts that she'll take any donation -- so take her up on the offer and have fun creating more than Afghans for Amigos! Just a few of the recent donations featured on the Afghans for Amigos website include:

-cute crocheted bags to be distributed to Mexican children along with crayons and coloring books

-a partially completed afghan from a local dance studio

-255 knit squares to be assembled into afghans

And much much more! In fact, half the fun of Afghans for Amigos is browsing their blog. Lu features pictures, names, stories, anecdotes, and sometimes even patterns sent in by charitable knitters across the country.

How Can I Help?

By knitting, of course! Dig out all those half-finished projects, failed experiments, and patterns you've been dying to try: Afghans for Amigos will take them all. Just visit their website at for more information on how to donate. And remember: with Afghans for Amigos, there's no such thing as a failed project.
