Adding Fringe -- A Fun Finishing Technique Anyone Can Learn

Creating a professional look for knitting projects is one of the purposes of finishing techniques. Then...there are the fun ones. Adding a fringe is one of these fancy tricks. It's easy, do it without a pattern and quickly jazz up any project.

Adding Fringe to Knitting Projects

1. First, wrap the yarn around a rectangle of card that is a little longer than the length of the finished fringe. For instance, if you want a three-inch fringe on your project, make the length approximately 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 inches.

2. Next, take a small pair of sharp scissors and cut all the pieces of yarn at one end of the card.

3. Pick up 2 to 3 pieces and fold them in half.

4. Attach the fringe to your project with a crochet hook from front to back through the middle of a stitch in the first row of your knitting.

5. Hook the folded lengths of yarn and begin to pull them through the stitch. A loop forms this way.

6. Hook the ends of the lengths of yarn and pull them through the loop you just made.

7. Pull the ends firmly to secure the piece of fringe.

This creates a fabulous fringe to any project. Jazz up the fringe by using different color combinations, a color that contrasts with the rest of the project, or even add beads to the fringe. Whatever you choose, this is one knitting technique you're sure to use over and over.
