Acrylic Yarns Are Perfect for Charity Knitting

7 charity knitting projects to use up your acrylic yarns

Acrylic yarns are 'man-made' -- in other words, they are not 'natural fibers, like wool or silk or cotton. Because they are manufactured for durability, acrylic yarns are ideal for lots of different charity projects. Another plus is that acrylic yarns are washable and dryable!

Many knitters, after they get some experience, prefer to switch from acrylic yarns to the natural fibers, which often leaves them with a stash of acrylic yarns that might be wasted.

KNITTING PROJECTS FOR ACRYLIC YARNS

Here are 7 charity projects that you can knit for in order to use up your acrylic yarns:

1. Warm Up America - this project calls for simply knitted 7" x 9" squares made from acrylic yarns that can then be joined together to form blankets for the homeless.

2. 'Preemie' Hats - tiny babies need to wear tiny hats, since their 'thermostats' aren't working very well yet, and most heat loss is through the top of the head. These can be donated to your nearest hospital.

3. Hats (for both children and adults) knitted with acrylic yarns can be donated to your local Red Cross or Salvation Army for distribution here, or in other countries around the world.

4. Slippers - lots of slippers knit with acrylic yarns are needed by various community-based organizations. Check with your local women's shelters, detox houses and mental health programs for the need in your area.

5. Caps For Kids program -- join an estimated 15,000 individuals who are making knitted caps, gloves and mittens, slippers, scarfs, sweaters, baby blankets, booties, toys, etc.

6. Chemocaps.com - here in the U.S. and in countries all over the world, cancer patients of all ages from infants to seniors are in need of 'chemocaps' hand knit with acrylic yarns, when they lose their hair during treatments.

7. The Snuggles Project, dubbed 'Hugs for Homeless Animals,' asks knitters to create 'blankets' out of acrylic yarns, for animal shelters across the country.

If you are interested in knitting for charity, check with your local community associations. There are probably many more charity knitting projects you can support - and use up your acrylic yarns at the same time.
