7,000 Sweaters -- Is this a Charity Knitting Record?
Sweaters for needy kids are flowing at The Fountains knitting charity
If you look up charity knitting in the dictionary, you may just see the name of Agnes Boyer there. Why? Because this lady has taken knitting for charity to the extreme. As the last original member of The Fountains knitting group, this lady has knit an amazing amount of sweaters for needy kids. See if you can top this lady's generosity.
Charity knitting story from the heart
Once upon a time, there was a little girl. This little girl didn't have much and was excited when offered her choice of sweaters made by some kindly, elderly ladies with hearts of gold. When the little girl saw the pile of sweaters from which she could choose, she ran excitedly to a beautiful pink sweater and immediately put it on.
But alas! The beautiful pink sweater was so large on the little girl it touched the ground. She was encouraged to choose a different sweater to no avail. She wanted the beautiful pink sweater and none other would do.
The little girl left with the beautiful pink sweater and stories are still told to this day how she wore it every day -- even to bed. She was a happy little girl in a beautiful pink sweater knit with love by an elderly lady with a big heart.
How it inspires you
Okay...this obviously isn't a fairy tale, but it is a real story and it is what has inspired and encouraged Agnes Boyer to help knit over 7,000 sweaters for needy boys and girls. You see, Agnes is the last remaining original member of The Fountains knitting group that started 19 years ago.
The Fountains is a retirement home in La Cholla, Arizona that helps needy children in six Pima County school districts and the Arizona School for the Deaf and the Blind. Every Monday, a dozen or so women meet there to knit and knit they do. Every year, this group of women donates around 500 sweaters to children.
Agnes is now 94 years old but has no intention of quitting. The story of the little girl and the beautiful pink sweater is a true story involving a real little girl and a pink sweater Agnes knit. She says the joy on the little girl's face and knowing how happy she makes kids is worth knitting everyone of those 7,000 sweaters and she would do it all again.
Here's a challenge for all you knitting charities out there. Start knitting and keep Agnes in mind. Do your best to beat her record. Even if you can't top Agnes, you'll be a winner and so will the children who receive your gifts.
Why don't you knit for charity and create a fairy tale story for a needy child in your town. All it takes is a little time, a pair of knitting needles, and a big heart.
