Finding a Great Knitting Blog

Looking for a great knitting blog? If not, why not? You might laugh, but following knitting blogs is actually a great way to keep in touch with the knitting community. Unlike some blogs, where people go on and on about nothing of interest, with a knit blog you know you'll be reading about something that matters. And it's always fun to have a place to waste time online!

Sock Knitting Patterns for Spring and Summer

Every spring, I find new sock knitting patterns to try. That might seem strange -- as the weather warms up, who needs to knit socks? But if you love knitting socks as much as I do, you know it's not that weird after all. Besides, if you live in a cooler climate like me, you still wear socks for a month or two yet -- and it's nice if they bring you some bright spring colors.

With that in mind, here are some of my favorite knitted sock patterns this year.

When to Avoid Using Discount Yarn

It's no secret that I love discount yarn. Actually I love anything that's on sale (just ask my husband), but that's another story. I can spend hours pawing through discount yarns at stores, garage sales, and flea markets. No thrift store is safe from me!

Over the years, though, hard experience has taught me that there's a time and place for discount knitting yarns. They work really well for scarves, afghans, and the like, but I've found that there are definitely times when you do not want to use some random sale item you pulled from a garage sale bin.

Knit for Charity and Be a Pal

When you knit for charity, a simple act of kindness means so much. In 2001, Jenny Carp performed a simple act. She knitted a chemo cap for her friend's twin sister, Jane. What was just a simple act of kindness to Jenny was much, much more to Jane. Jane took the time to tell Jenny how much receiving that cap during her bout with cancer meant to her. That's all it took.

Knitting Instructions for Those Who Think They Can't

I've offered knitting instructions before, but there's a problem with learning anything online. It usually comes in with the people who find it difficult to learn either by reading or seeing -- because the Internet offers plenty of those options -- and learn best by doing. In that case, it's difficult to find good instructions on knitting, because the Internet can't hold your hand and help you form a stitch.

These knit instructions are the next best thing, though.
